The BMW X3M/X4M intake setup, while seemingly tricky at first glance, is a very well-designed system within the available space. The flow path from the filters to the turbo inlets is very direct and doesn't change direction as abruptly as typical OEM airbox designs. So, instead of a complete redesign, we focused on improving the OEM airbox with less restrictive flow and improved thermal efficiency. We developed replacement filters made of non-woven mesh that have a much higher flow rate than the original paper filters. To help lower intake air temperatures and force air into the airbox, we designed large front scoops positioned behind the grilles. The carbon scoops channel air into the ducts and effectively unblock the intake side of the airbox. The final piece is the carbon fiber airbox cover which, although it adds nothing to performance, allows for a more audible induction sound and gives the engine compartment a much-needed aesthetic upgrade.
